The Department of English, BUP, in collaboration with the Literature and Drama Club (BUPLDC), successfully celebrated Shakespeare’s Day 2026 on 23 April 2026, through a blend of academic discussion and cultural performance, highlighting the enduring relevance of William Shakespeare in contemporary literary and dramatic discourse.
The celebration began with a thought-provoking seminar titled “War in Shakespeare: Theoretical Resonance in Contemporary Literary Criticism,” conducted by Lieutenant Colonel Dilip Kumar Roy, PhD, AEC. The session explored Shakespeare’s representation of war and its continuing significance within contemporary literary criticism.
The vibrant cultural segment brought literature to life on stage through the performances. The program featured a compelling rendition of "The Merchant of Venice", followed by the recitation of Shakespearean sonnets that reflected the richness and timelessness of poetic tradition.
Adding a creative contemporary dimension to the celebration, students staged an original drama, "The Maker's Mirror" written by Zerin Tasnim Ahmed, Graduate Student of MA in English Literature & Cultural Studies, Department of English, BUP. The play intricately woven together various iconic Shakespearean characters into an engaging and imaginative narrative, showcasing both literary creativity and dramatic excellence.
Respected Dean of FASS and Dean of CHSR, esteemed faculty members, and students actively engaged in both of the segments, making them intellectually enriching and memorable. The event stood as a celebration of Shakespeare’s enduring legacy and reflected the dynamic spirit of literary and cultural engagement fostered within the Department of English and the Literature and Drama Club, BUP.
